- The footages are from the regia marina from 1938 to 1943. Some shots are not from the Regia Aeronautica. I could have used colour footages from ww2 documentaries but I didn't in the interest of the consistency of the video.
I started the video one year ago. I started a french navy video named "la Royale" too but as Mauzer upload it on youtube first I gave up.

@@SaimonTM yes and no Regia Marina main mission was to protect the convoy in fact the war in the mediterranean was a convoy war and italian did a fantastic job at it. I mean who could be stupid enough to send it navy against UK who have unlimited resource and can replace it ships in a blink of an eye meanwhile italy was just a tiny semi industraliazed country ...so they never risk losing a ship in a head on battle

The fact that people seemingly ignore Italian military capability in WW2 just because they used tankettes is proved invalid in this 3 min montage. The Regia Marina was up there, if not superior in some aspects with the likes of the french and Germans (maybe not quite the British, Japanese and Americans, and unfortunately, I can't put "Soviet" and "Navy" in a serious sentence)
For sure it was a serious opponent. Early war the Regia marina had good aa in comparison to the French and German navies which were still using semi auto 37mm aa guns. I would say that the Marine nationale was still in pair with the Regia Marina. Even if the Regia could align more modern or "mordernized" battleships, French cruisers were at least as good as Italians ones. But regarding the destroyers I would say that French ones were superior. Italian destroyers suffer issues regarding their seaworthiness and French contre-torpilleurs had a good armament and speed. I also believe that French training was somewhat superior (+issues with the Italian shells which worsen the accuracy of the 381 mm guns of the Littorio class battleships)
The Regia Marina obviously comes second to the RN, IJN, and USN, but was easily on a par with the Marine Nationale and far outstripped the farce the Nazis called a navy.
imo soviet navy was plagued with bad admirals and had mostly destroyers

Fun fact:The Regia Marina poor performances were linked to Constant fuel shortages.After 1943,Germany invaded Italy and German soldiers found that in the Regia Marina HQ there was quite alot of unused fuel ,this led many people, like Goering and Hitler himself,to belive that some factions of if not the entire Italian navy had been in contact with the Allied forces since the start of the War and were secretly sabotaging the War effort from the inside

Also Regia Marina and poor performances are not words that go well together.

The bad performance of Regia Marina was in part of a lack of technology like radar in the ship, fuel shortages AND sabotage in the fleet since the very first day of war, only the submarines and X Flottiglia MAS was excluded of the sabotage problems.

Hold on, you can't fool me. The ship at 2:39 is American. Those gun turrets are twin 5"/38s, with 20mm Oerlikon in the foreground and up to the left of the image in the superstructure you can see a quad Bofors 40 mount, and yet even higher up you can see the radar dish from the top of a Mark 37 gun director, which after looking around online for an hour I have concluded that it's a Mark 25 fire control radar, which was mounted on the Mark 37 gun director post war. taking all this into account that ship is an Iowa class battleship post-war.
Yes, as I said in a previous comment these were filling scenes. Nowadays I have way more footages from the regia marina
@@zeklere715 ah ok, I had not seen that comment, just the description that said "The footages are from the regia marina from 1938 to 1943. Some shots are not from the Regia Aeronautica.". The regia Aeronautica of course being the Italian air force and doesn't include their navy.
all and all though don't get me wrong it's a very good video, and I'd like to see more WW2 navy stuff in a similar vein.

The regia marina was no joke,but the WW2 was a war of industry and Italy have 1/4 industry of Germany and incomparable with URSS and USA

Well... about the battleship, they put the old 380mm from the Francesco caracciolo on the newer Littorio class ones, but they added a twist, the shell velocity was HIGH. Too much in fact that they never hitted anything. About cruisers and destroyers i dunno a lot. The regia marina as much as i love it, i cannot say was an unbreakable force... . Is very sad that we had to scrap everything after the war, those ships would have been great to teach the students. If they straight up added 400mm cannonst from scratch, whit adeguate shell velocity, i don't think someone would have dared to sail the mediterranean.
